A beautiful day. Bright blue sky and a route as flat as an ironing board. I have breakfast with Yumiko and Kaoru at the "Welcome Hotel", where I "fill up" on coffee for the next few days. I walk one kilometre to Kochi station and take a slow train full of schoolgirls, all (!) sitting next to each other, wordlessly staring at their smartphones, back to the pilgrimage route. This is followed by 33 km track, half of which leads through rice fields. Yes, my route is "optimised", that is, it shows me the shortest way. To be able to walk this path, I have to constantly look at the map and GPS. I often get lost. Only a few metres at a time, but that adds up to a certain "lost" distance.
A young pilgrim from Kyoto gives me valuable advice about the rest of the route. "Put up your tent in the Youjo-so," he says. There is a new toilet and free tea right next to it.
After a few kilometres on the really beautiful "Cycling Road", which runs alongside the main road to Aki, I find this place around 4:30 pm. Well, the dimensions of the Henro hut are meant for Japanese pilgrims. I don't fit in and have to put a rubbish bin under my camp so that I don't fall off the air mattress tonight. It'll work out somehow…

Hi Walter,
