Gratulation, Maja! Abschlußprüfung mit Note "Sehr Gut" bestanden!
Maja's "final exam" begins at 7AM with the ascent to Temple 12 (Shozan-ji). This is actually the "entrance exam" for all pilgrims, because after the third day of pilgrimage, the "wheat is separated from the chaff". Those who survive this day are said to be able to continue walking until the end. But many give up here too. Why? You can't avoid the pilgrimage path. Either you go up there on foot or by car/taxi on a long serpentine road.
Up to the temple we climb from 100 m to about 750 m altitude, then go down to 200 m and climb up again to 700 m. All this happens on tracks, through thick woods, mostly stony. Only after about five hours do we meet the first pilgrims, who struggle up and down the total 22 km route. With the exception of a young woman - "escorted" by an older man - they are all around 70 years old.
Before I forget, we also see a "trail runner", And one has to see it with one’s own eyes. The woman - as old as I am - runs the trail.
We pass an ancient cedar tree and walk the remaining 10 km downhill. At Temple 11 (Fujidera) we waddle like ducks to the pilgrims' office and drop like wet rags onto a bench in front of it. This far and no further! All the warning lights in my body are turned on and tell me to rest, Maja's calfs don’t want to play along either. No use complaining, two more kilometres to the Business Hotel Access, where we throw our backpacks into the room and go to the Chinese restaurant around the corner, which Maja has "googled".
Congratulations, Maja! You passed your final exam with a grade of "very good"!
